Groundhog Day is here and so is the popular Bill Murray movie! 

Emerging from our own post-holiday, wintry hibernation, we felt it appropriate to remind you that Groundhog Day, the 1993 comedy starring Bill Murray and Andie Macdowell, is available to watch right here on Philo. What is Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day is a unique American tradition that is celebrated every year on February 2. The “holiday” originated in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where it has been a tradition for over 130 years. On this day, people gather to watch a groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerge from its burrow to see if it will predict the end of winter by either seeing its shadow or not. In short: Shadow, six more weeks of winter; no shadow, spring is coming soon!

By the way, we personally don’t recommend getting your weather advice from a furry woodland creature, but you can always get up to date weather knowledge from Accuweather. 

While its roots are in Pennsylvania, Groundhog Day has become a popular event celebrated across the United States and around the world. It’s a fun tradition and what better way to celebrate than by watching the film classic?

In the movie, Murray plays a weatherman, Phil Connors, who doesn’t predict a blizzard and gets caught in a time loop in Punxsutawney. Each day, he wakes to the same song playing on the radio and concocts different, crazy plans to spend his time before eventually falling in love with Rita (MacDowell). As his repetitive day starts to depress him, he seeks a better use of his time – and just maybe an escape from his time prison!
