Celebrate National Streaming Day with Philo!

It’s the 10-year anniversary of National Streaming Day!

Started in 2014 by one of our platform partners, Roku, National Streaming Day is a day to celebrate streaming – from devices to platforms!

This anniversary is a great time to look back, and forward, to see how streaming has evolved in the last decade. According to a Kantar study, 95% of American households now hold at least one streaming subscription, indicating near total market saturation.

Philo itself has changed so much since our start in 2009 as a streaming service exclusively for university students, called Tivli. A few years later, we changed our name to Philo and opened our product to all consumers, not just college students. Today, we’ve grown to having more than a million subscribers!

So how many streaming services are most Americans subscribed to? Citing an article from Forbes, on average, Americans pay for 2.9 streaming subscriptions and spend an average of $46 on streaming services per month.

Back in 2022, Philo shared that “more than half of Americans turn to TV for comfort and to relieve stress.” This year, we wanted to see how people navigate the even more crowded streaming space. So, a few months ago, we conducted our own survey of Americans who subscribe to streaming services. According to the results of the poll, out of 1200 people, 61% of Americans use a streaming service every day. We also learned that older millennials are the demographic most interested in bundling their streaming services to have an easier and more customized TV viewing experience. Those most interested in bundling their service offerings subscribe to an average of 4+ streaming subscriptions (much higher than the average consumer).

Also, according to the above-mentioned Kantar report, over half of US households now use a Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) service in the average week. With this demand and interest in mind, over the past few years Philo has added a group of 70+ curated and diverse FAST channels to our lineup, with more being added monthly!
