Monster’s Ball (2001)

This is the big one. Berry won the Best Actress Oscar for playing Leticia, a widow who forms an unlikely connection with a prison guard (Billy Bob Thornton) tied to her family’s grief. It’s heavy, it’s beautiful, and it made history as the first Best Actress win for a Black woman. 

 

Boomerang (1992)

Eddie Murphy plays a smooth-talking ad exec who finally meets someone smoother, and Berry is Angela, the coworker who sees right through the act and steals his heart anyway. The cast is stacked (Robin Givens, Martin Lawrence, Grace Jones), and it’s endlessly rewatchable.

 

B.A.P.S (1997)

 

Two Georgia waitresses fly to LA for a music-video contest and somehow end up living in a Beverly Hills mansion. Critics hated it in 1997. Everyone else eventually caught up, and now it’s a full-blown cult classic (those costumes alone).

 

Gothika (2003)

Berry is a prison psychiatrist who wakes up on the wrong side of the bars, locked in her own institution, and accused of a murder she can’t remember. Add Robert Downey Jr. and Penelope Cruz, and you’ve got a perfectly creepy night in. 

 

Swordfish (2001)

 

A slick early-2000s hacker thriller where John Travolta needs a computer genius (Hugh Jackman) for a massive heist, and Berry’s Ginger is the one who pulls him in. She’s got secrets, obviously.

 

The Last Boy Scout (1991)

 

An early Berry role in a loud, quippy action flick from the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon. She plays Cory, and her character’s murder is what sets Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans off on the whole wild ride.  

 

Dark Tide (2012)

 

Berry plays a shark expert who lost her nerve after a close call and gets talked into one last dangerous dive. If you like your thrillers with fins, this one’s for you. 

 

Lost in America (2020)

 

A documentary on youth homelessness in America, with Berry lending her voice alongside Rosario Dawson, Tiffany Haddish, and Jon Bon Jovi. A different kind of watch, and a powerful one.
